Data Doughnut

AI & spreadsheet access

Ask your AI. It checks our data.

Connect Data Doughnut to the AI assistant you already use, like Claude or Grok. Then just ask questions in plain words. Your AI looks up the answers in our data while you talk. Prefer spreadsheets? You can link our data straight into Excel or Google Sheets, too.

Work by talking, not by searching

More and more work gets done by asking an AI assistant, not by clicking through websites. Some people call this the conversational enterprise: a team that asks questions out loud and gets answers it can trust, right where it is already working.

The catch is that an AI is only as good as what it can look up. On its own, it guesses or searches the web. Connected to Data Doughnut, it pulls real numbers from government sources, like Medicare, the Census, HUD, FEMA, and Congress, and it tells you where each one came from.

Connect your AI Available now

Our AI connection works like a plug. Once it’s in, your assistant can use our desks the way you do: look up a nursing home, size up a town, check disaster risk, or find who represents a ZIP code. It sees only the desks your account has.

It works with any AI that supports connectors. We’ve tested it with Claude, Grok, and Microsoft Copilot. Each app has its own name for this: Grok calls it a plugin in the web browser and a connector in its phone app. Under the hood they all use the same standard, called MCP (Model Context Protocol). You don’t need to know how it works.

A story: one conversation, a day’s research

Sam is a loan officer at a small bank in Missouri. A buyer wants a loan to purchase a 90-bed nursing home in a small town. Sam opens the bank’s AI assistant, which is connected to Data Doughnut.

SamWhat should I know about this nursing home before we lend on it? It’s in Scott County.
AI, using Data DoughnutHere’s what the public records show:
  • Overall rating is good, but staffing is rated 1 star out of 5, which is a warning sign.
  • It changed owners in late 2022. Here are the buyer and the seller.
  • The biggest disaster risk in the county is earthquake, then tornado.
  • About 1 in 5 people in the area are 65 or older, and the area has only one hospital.
SamWho else lends on nursing homes in Missouri? And write this up as a one-page memo.
AI, using Data DoughnutHere are the lenders holding HUD care loans in Missouri, and your memo with a source listed for each fact.

That used to mean a day on six government websites. Now it takes a few minutes, every number has a source, and Sam can ask “why?” at any step.

Things you can ask

What you need

Connect Claude (claude.ai and the Claude app)

  1. In Claude, open Settings → Connectors and choose Add custom connector.
  2. Name it Data Doughnut and paste https://mcp.datadoughnut.com/mcp. Leave the other settings empty.
  3. Click Connect. A Data Doughnut window opens. Sign in the way you usually do, then click Allow.

On team or company plans, an account owner may need to add the connector first.

Connect Grok

  1. On the web, open Grok’s plugins. In the Grok phone app, open connectors. Choose to add your own.
  2. Name it Data Doughnut and paste https://mcp.datadoughnut.com/mcp.
  3. A Data Doughnut window opens. Sign in, then click Allow.

Connect Microsoft Copilot

Copilot adds connectors as an app package, and in most companies your Microsoft 365 admin installs it. Download our package and send it to them: data-doughnut-copilot.zip.

  1. Your admin uploads the zip as a custom app — in the Microsoft 365 admin center under Integrated apps, or in Teams under Apps → Manage your apps → Upload an app. Don't unzip it first.
  2. Open Copilot, turn on Data Doughnut in its connectors or tools, and ask a question.
  3. A Data Doughnut window opens. Sign in, then click Allow.

If your company's settings block the sign-in or the upload, email support@datadoughnut.com and we'll work through it with your admin.

Any other AI with connectors

Look for a setting called connectors, plugins, integrations, or MCP servers. Add our address. If it offers a sign-in, use it. If it asks for a key, use your access key. Stuck? Email support@datadoughnut.com and we’ll help.

For developers: Cursor, Claude Code, and access keys

Tools that use a key send it in a header with every request. Any one of these works:

api-key: YOUR_ACCESS_KEY
X-Api-Key: YOUR_ACCESS_KEY
Authorization: Bearer YOUR_ACCESS_KEY

Cursor: open Cursor’s MCP settings (or the file ~/.cursor/mcp.json) and add:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "data-doughnut": {
      "url": "https://mcp.datadoughnut.com/mcp",
      "headers": { "api-key": "YOUR_ACCESS_KEY" }
    }
  }
}

Claude Code: in a terminal, run:

claude mcp add --transport http data-doughnut https://mcp.datadoughnut.com/mcp --header "api-key: YOUR_ACCESS_KEY"

What your AI can see: only the desks your account has at Level 3, never anyone else’s data. It can also browse our whole catalog to see what each source holds, and pull rows from the sources your desks include (up to 1,000 at a time; use a spreadsheet link for more). The connection is read-only; your AI can’t change anything. You can see and disconnect your AI tools any time on your Account page. If your plan ends, the connection stops working.

Excel & Google Sheets Available now

Link any source in our catalog straight into a spreadsheet. No downloading files and no copy-and-paste. Your sheet pulls the data from us, and it stays up to date when you refresh it.

A story: the grant table that updates itself

Maya writes grants for a rural health clinic. Every grant asks the same things: How poor is the area? Is it short on doctors? Is it rural?

She used to download files from three government websites before every deadline, then copy the numbers into her spreadsheet by hand. Now her Google Sheet has live links to our poverty, doctor shortage, and rural status sources, narrowed to the eight counties her clinic serves.

When the government puts out new numbers, her sheet picks them up on its own. Her charts and tables update with it. At deadline time she just checks the sheet and hits send.

How to do it

  1. Sign in and open a source in the catalog.
  2. Scroll to Get the full data. If you like, pick a state, county, or year to narrow it down.
  3. Click Create link and copy it. You can see your links again any time on your Account page.
  4. Paste it into your spreadsheet:
    • Excel: go to Data → From Web and paste the link. Use Data → Refresh All to update it later.
    • Google Sheets: paste the =IMPORTDATA("…") formula we give you into a cell. Google refreshes it on its own, about once an hour.
    • Just want a file? Use Download as a CSV file.
